Ancient Greek make up

 

Ancient Greek makeup was fairly subtle in comparison with today.  Make up had to be as natural looking as possible as too much makeup  was   frowned upon- this ideal was a regular occurrence throughout history and also one  of the many times where fair skin was highly desired and often associated  with being wealthy.

To achieve pale skin the women of Ancient Greece used chalk and highly poisonous led.

 

 Women turned to nature to give their cheeks a natural looking flush  and rosy lips using alkanet root,seaweed, plants, flower petals, fruits  and the dangerous Cinnabar ,a form of mercury red in colour that was  crushed into a powder.

A full brow and even a uni brow was popular in Ancient Greece- if this couldn’t be achieved naturally burnt cork and charcoal could be  used to draw them on. This same mixture was also used to emphasis the  eyes and darken the eyelashes. Olive oil could also be added to the  mixture for easier application.
