1920s Make-up

Cosmetics really changed in the 1920s and was a huge contrast to the  Victorian Era where a clean face was in and any noticeable makeup was unacceptable. After woman won the right to vote and had replaced the working roles of  men during World War 1 attitudes towards woman had changed.

Women got rid of restricting corsets, cut off their long locks and started to  express themselves freely with makeup.

With the beginnings of the makeup industry ,cosmetics became readily available  for the first time allowing women to purchase lipsticks, mascacra and makeup  compacts affordably and shame free.

The most iconic looks of the 20s were the Flapper girls and the silent movie  actresses which fashioned dark eyes, bold lips and rouged cheeks.

I think the 20s was definitely inspiration for todays ‘ smokey eye’ look.  Blacks and greys were used on the lids and Kohl liner was used for the  ultimate smokey effect. Brows were very thin and often arched downwards.

 Mascara was now used but came in a cake form that was used by wetting the  formula and applying it with a tiny brush onto the lashes.

 

Red lipstick was a very popular choice and was applied so it accentuated the  cupids bow whilst the width of the lips were played down giving an illusion  of small but full lips.

 Rouge was used in the colours rose berry and later orange which was applied  in a circle to the cheeks.

 Powder was applied with a puff onto the face but the colour choice was very limited.
